Chrissy Teigen's Orange Garlic-Honey Shrimp

Chrissy Teigen actually calls this dish just Garlic Honey Shrimp, no orange. The first time I made it, I re-looked at the cookbook title and thought, “why isn’t this called ORANGE honey shrimp!?!?”. The orange is so dominating in this dish, it’s what really takes it to the next level of awesomeness. Just a tip though, the recipe calls for 1 teaspoon of red pepper flakes and 1 teaspoon sure does a doosey on your taste buds. I usually put half a teaspoon in, and it’s still a lot of heat. My husband and I are pretty big babies when it comes to spicy foods so I’ll probably just be sticking to ¼ teaspoon of red pepper flakes and not cry by the end of the meal. Pair this dish with some jasmine rice, and you got yourself one bangin’ meal!

Step One: Peel a 1 inch strip of orange zest using a vegetable peeler and set aside. Continue to finely grate half of the orange and set aside. Juice both oranges into a bowl (you should have just over ½ cup). Whisk in your honey, vinegar and soy sauce.

Ingredients to make sauce

Step Two: In a small bowl, combine 1 tablespoon of your orange mixture with your cornstarch and create a paste. Then stir that paste back into the rest of the orange- soy mixture.

Step Three: Pat the shrimp dry with paper towels and season with salt and pepper generously on both sides. In a big ole skillet, heat 1 ½ tablespoons over medium-high heat until very hot. Add the shrimp evenly throughout your skillet and do not touch until ready to flip when the underside is bright pink, about 1 ½ minutes. Flip and continue to cook for 1 more minute and transfer to plate.

Step Four: Add the remaining 1 ½ tablespoons of oil to the same skillet. Add in your garlic, scallion whites, ginger, and red pepper flakes (keep your desired level of hotness in mind when adding your red pepper flakes, see note above) and cook until fragrant, about 45 seconds. Next, add the orange-soy liquid and the strip of orange zest and cook until thickened, 1 to 2 minutes. Return the shrimp to the skillet, add the sliced green onions, and toss to coat in sauce evenly. Serve over rice and garnish with orange zest. TIP: Don’t skip the orange zest step and put in the little extra work. It’s so worth it!
