Sweet Potato Dumplings

This recipe is a Smith Family classic. My mom has taken this recipe for Sweet Potato Dumplings over to every party or holiday gathering for the last 20 years and everyone goes CRAZY for it. (Cut each in half to Serve 16)

Step One: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Drain the canned sweet potatoes and add them into a medium sized mixing bowl. Sprinkle cinnamon over the sweet potatoes and mash them evenly with a fork. 

Ingredients to make sweet potato dumplings

Step Two: Grease a large baking dish. Take one biscuit and split it into two equal parts. Flatten each biscuit into about a 4-inch circle and place one half in the baking dish making room for 8 dumplings and reserving the other half for later to place on top. Continue this process for all 8 dumplings. 

Step Three: Place a generous spoon full of the sweet potato mixture onto each flattened biscuit. Take the remaining top biscuit half and place on top of the dumpling. Pinch the edges with your fingers to fuse the edges of the dumpling together. Continue for all 8 dumplings.

Make the Sauce

Step Four: In a small sauce pan over medium-high heat, melt the butter. Add the sugar, brown sugar and water. Bring to a boil and reduce heat to medium. Let simmer for 2 to 3 minutes and remove from heat. Pour sauce over dumplings and place into the oven. Bake for 30 minutes. 

Sweet Potato Dumplings

For the Dumplings:

  • 1 can Pillsbury Flakey Biscuits

  • 1 32- oz can of Sweet Potatoes

  • 1 Tsp Cinnamon

For the Sauce:

  • 1 Stick of Butter

  • 1 Cup of Sugar

  • 1 Cup of Brown Sugar

  • 1 Cup Water

For the Dumplings
